Due to its "non-cutting" point geometry, the Sprotte needle does not puncture the skin as freely as does a conventional Quincke needle. Therefore it is advised to incise the skin with blade or lancet prior to inserting the Sprotte needle. An introducer needle is offered as another option in performing this task the introducer needle is placed first, followed by the Sprotte needle which is placed through (inside) the introducer needle.
EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA P e d i a t r i c
The Sprotte Atraumatic Epidural needle (aka "Special Sprotte") is available in select sizes specific to Pediatric application.
An atraumatic needle greatly reduces the likelihood of dural leakage in the event of dural puncture, given that the needle's point separates the tissue rather than cuts it. Upon retraction of needle, tissue folds back in on itself with no resultant puncture damage, and therefore no dural leakage.
The Special Sprotte's internal rounded ramp deflects the catheter laterally, and its design is such that the catheter may be advanced or withdrawn for repositioning without fear of damaging the catheter.
